Ann Coulter, Edwards and Bigotry

Yesterday I got in my email a mesage from the Edwards campaign linking to an Ann Coulter bit in which Ms. Coulter uses an offensive term to describe homosexuals. This is natural enough for someone like Ann Coulter - not the offensive term, per se, but the fact of her routinely over-the-top rhetoric occasionally coming back to bite her. Now, just who is Ann Coulter? As relates to Republicans running for President, absolutely nobody. She's employed by no one's campaign and has no say about how any campaign will be run. Given this complete disconnect between Coulter and everyone on the GOP side of the aisle, it is natural that the left is demanding that Mitt Romney - who happened to speak before Coulter - comment and/or apologise for Ms. Coulter's remark. This is just an attempt to smear a decent man with the rhetoric of someone he has no actual connection to.

On the other hand, John Edwards - he of the illegal donations from law firms and the hired bigot for his blog - is trying to make some campaign money off the issue. In a President of the United States, we fully expect them to be above this sort of thing - if Edwards was really offended by the muck, then he'd just stay away from it...all his fundraising appeal has done is bring the muck to the attention of people who would might have been blessed to never have heard it, and thus would have been spared a bit more nausea over our political process.

An Coulter is a lot of things, none of which bears any relation to how the GOP is going to govern - on the other hand, the kooks on the left (Michael Moore, eg) have a definitive influence on Democratic policy (as we can see in how the kook left moved the Democrats from patriotism to defeatism vis a vis the War on Terrorism). What we see here is an attempt to "kookify" the GOP - an attempt by Democrats to pretend that right wing kooks are in charge of the GOP, and this being done in order to deflect attention away from the left wing kook who really do run the Democratic Party. Yet another example of Democrats refusal to run on their beliefs coupled with their determination to "win" by means of making the GOP odious.

It worked a bit in 2006, but I think that the more nastiness the Democrats bring up, the less effective it will be as we go into 2008.
